Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum curator for spaceflight memorabilia and space science fiction objects Dr. Margaret Weitekamp will explain the links between murals and mission patches, including Lumen Martin Winter’s mural, “Steeds of Apollo.” Winter’s mural exemplified a particularly American tradition connecting fine art to spaceflight and Weitekamp will discuss the rich history of spaceflight mission patch designs. Plus, hear the unusual story of the Apollo 13 Robbins medallions, which featured “Steeds of Apollo” imagery and were carried aboard the famous flight around the Moon and back. This program is free with regular museum admission.
