SUMMARY:America on Screen: Epic Yellowstone
DESCRIPTION:Join us on select Friday afternoons for a special film series commemorating America’s 250th Anniversary: America on Screen. Enjoy screenings of Smithsonian Channel programs that explore the people\, places\, and stories that shaped America. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEpic Yellowstone: Down the River Wild\n\n\n\nThe Yellowstone is the longest undammed river in the contiguous 48 states\, flowing with a wildness that is both violent and vital to the creatures that are drawn to its banks. From Yellowstone Lake\, North America’s largest high-elevation body of water\, to the Missouri River\, follow its nearly 700-mile journey over falls and through canyons into America’s heartland. See how Yellowstone’s bison\, otters\, coyotes\, and thrill-seekers adapt to-and thrive in-these wild\, untamed waters. \n\n\n\n52 minutes \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIncluded with museum admission. No registration required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented courtesy of the Smithsonian Channel.

SUMMARY:Summer Thursdays & FILM@LIM: Felicity: An American Girl Adventure
DESCRIPTION:LIM and the Port Jefferson Arts Council bring films to our community that touch upon a variety of topics for FREE! Each film screening includes an engaging talk with a guest speaker or a fun activity this month\, join us as we watch Felicity: An American Girl Adventure (2005)! \n\n\n\nBased on the American Girl Doll Series of books\, Felicity: An American Girl Adventure is a family-friendly film starring a young Shailene Woodley\, which follows Felicity Merriman in this coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of the impending American Revolution. \n\n\n\n\nTen-year-old Felicity Merriman is growing up in Williamsburg\, Virginia\, just before the American Revolution. High-spirited and independent\, Felicity decides to tame a wild horse owned by an abusive leather maker/tanner\, Jiggy Nye. Even though her parents Martha and Edward forbid her\, she runs off to be with the horse\, whom she names Penny. She eventually tames Penny and the two become fast friends. Meanwhile\, tension grows between the colonists. Some\, including Edward and his apprentice Ben Davidson\, wish for independence from King George III of England. Others\, like Felicity’s grandfather and her best friend Elizabeth Cole’s family\, remain loyal to the king. (WIKIPEDIA) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGuest Speaker\n\n\n\n\nAfter the screening\, join us for a fun discussion about Revolutionary War-era fashion with Sheila C. Argueta. \n\n\n\nSheila recently graduated summa cum laude from Stony Brook University with a B.A. in History and a minor in Studio Art\, earning the university’s Valedictorian Award. Her research interests include material culture\, labor history\, and historical dress\, with a particular focus on how clothing communicates identity and reflects broader social\, cultural\, and historical change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPartners\n\n\n\n\nMIDDLE COUNTRY PUBLIC LIBRARY will bring samples of their American Girl Doll collection that is available for MCPL patrons to check out. MCPL will bring Felicity and other historically appropriate friends in the series. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis screening will take place in the Gillespie Room located in the Carriage Museum. \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nThis program is free for all! SUMMARY:America on Screen: Coming to America
DESCRIPTION:Join us on select Friday afternoons for a special film series commemorating America’s 250th: Anniversary: America on Screen. Enjoy screenings of Smithsonian Channel programs that explore the people\, places\, and stories that shaped America. \n\n\n\nComing to America\n\n\n\nFor many immigrants\, their first sight of the U.S. is the Statue of Liberty. Colorized rare home movies and archival footage reveal the amazing stories of ordinary people who share the same dream. From Caribbean immigrants who settled in Harlem to Italian “radicals” shipped back home to celebrities such as Albert Einstein\, see how America changed as immigrants brought new cultures from the margins to the mainstream. \n\n\n\n48 minutes \n\n\n\nIncluded with museum admission. No registration required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented courtesy of the Smithsonian Channel.

SUMMARY:America on Screen: A Star-Spangled Story
DESCRIPTION:Join us on select Friday afternoons for a special film series commemorating America’s 250th: Anniversary: America on Screen. Enjoy screenings of Smithsonian Channel programs that explore the people\, places\, and stories that shaped America. \n\n\n\nA Star-Spangled Story: Battle for America\n\n\n\n“The Star-Spangled Banner” is known by all\, treasured for its powerful melody and stirring lyrics. And yet\, only about 40% of U.S. citizens know all the words. And even fewer know their meaning. Join us as we travel back to 1814\, when Washington D.C. was under British attack during the “Second War of Independence\,” and the very bricks and mortar of American democracy were reduced to smoking rubble. We examine the battle that inspired witness Francis Scott Key to immortalize its final moments\, then reveal how his poem transformed into an anthem. \n\n\n\n51 minute \n\n\n\nIncluded with museum admission.
