At the Museum Book Discussion & Tour

Museum staff will lead an informative tour of the exhibition Long Road to Freedom: Surviving Slavery on Long Island, followed by a discussion of Kathleen Velsor’s book, The Underground Railroad on Long Island, led by Emma Clark Librarians. The Long Island Museum, WUSB-FM's Sunday Street Concert Series and the Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council present Lucy Kaplansky live on stage in the Carriage Museum's Gillespie Room. According to The Boston Globe, “Lucy Kaplansky is becoming the troubadour laureate of modern folk.” Her late 2018 release Everyday Street, an acoustic-based, intimate album reflecting her live shows, brought us a collection of Lucy’s new songs often referencing her long-time home, Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. Whitman Bicentennial Read-In and Curator’s Tour

We’re honoring Walt Whitman’s affinity for the diverse voices that “sing America” with this opportunity to listen to and participate in readings of Whitman poems—especially those which celebrate Long Island-- its flora, fauna and seascapes. Suffolk Poets Laureate Gladys Henderson and George Wallace will each read a Whitman poem, sharing why it’s meaningful to them.
