Community Conversation: Shirley Chisholm in Her Own Words

March 11 @ 6:00 pm 7:30 pm

Against the backdrop of the Voices and Votes exhibition, we invite you to join a “Community Conversation” on the theme of Equal Rights for Women. This particular conversation will be anchored in a speech from Shirley Chisholm, which she gave on the floor of Congress on May 21, 1969.

Community Conversation programs provide an opportunity for people to come together for thoughtful discussion about our shared values as Americans—past, present, and future. This one-off, text-based discussion will be facilitated by Joe Murphy, Director of Grant-Making at Humanities New York (HNY) and will tackle an important aspect of life in a democracy and will encourage frank dialogue. Community Conversations allow New Yorkers to join in discussions that offer an alternative to received wisdom and provide the chance to take part in a shared community dialogue.

This program will take place in the Gillespie Room located in the Carriage Museum.

This month’s Community Conversation is part of the Humanities Discussion
series, “A New Agora for New York: Museums as Spaces for Democracy,” organized by the
Museum Association of New York. In ancient Greek cities an Agora was both an assembly of
people and the physical setting in which they gathered. It was an open space in which
intellectual and thought provoking discussions formed the foundation of a civil society. As we
approach an essential act of our nation’s founding, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the
Declaration of Independence, “A New Agora for New York” is creating spaces in museums
through exhibitions and programs in which communities can learn together and participate in
humanities discussions grounded in texts and objects of material culture.
