Collecting Preserving Celebrating
Long Island’s Black History at The Long Island Museum. The Long Island Museum (LIM), a Smithsonian Affiliate located in Stony Brook, New York, holds outstanding collections of Long Island regional art and history. LIM is seeking to add objects, photographs, and works of art to its permanent collection that explore the historical experiences and many contributions of African Americans living across the Nassau-Suffolk county regional area. These incoming treasures will help the Museum to explore and share Long Island’s rich Black history with our visitors for many years to come.

The LIM is proud of their newest publication A Checklist of Long Island Artists of the Nineteenth to the Mid-Twentieth Centuries, a fully-illustrated, full-color 100-page selective and alphabetized checklist of more than 1,000 artists (painters, printmakers, and sculptors) who lived and/or worked on Long Island during the time frame covered by the volume.

Long Road to Freedom: Surviving Slavery on Long Island
Based on the 2019 exhibition of the same name, the publication written by LIM’s Curator Jonathan M. Olly, Ph.D., focuses on the experiences of people of color from the 17th to 19th centuries. The five-chapter publication explores: how slavery operated, how African Americans resisted bondage, navigated the era of emancipation, and built communities in the decades after slavery, from Brooklyn to the Hamptons.
