Programs designed to creatively engage those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of memory loss and their care partners.

The Long Island Museum is proud to offer In the Moment to our community.

Thanks to generous funding, these programs are free for individuals living at home, as well as those in Day and Live-In Care Communities. 

All In the Moment programs are underwritten by a generous anonymous gift.

Guided Tours

Explore the museum’s incredible art and history collection, as well as exciting seasonal exhibits through multi-sensory tours. The programs are guided by museum educators in-person or on Zoom.

Art-Making Workshops

Creative expression and fun are at the heart of these hands-on workshops. No previous art making experience needed! Sessions are led by museum educators in our art studio or on Zoom.

Art Expression at The Long Island Museum

Join us for an afternoon of creativity as LIM hosts the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center’s Art Expression program. We’ll draw inspiration form LIM’s varied and beautiful collection of artwork, and then be guided in our own artmaking by a museum educator.

Mornings @ LIM

These monthly sessions are open to individuals living with dementia and their care partners. They offer time for creative engagement and social connection in our galleries and art studio, as well as through special music and movie programs. These programs are run in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center.

Gallery Tour: The World Before Cars

Explore highlights from the museum’s world-renowned carriage collection! Explore our collection of horse-drawn vehicles through touch objects, smells, and even a little music. Enjoy a guided discussion with museum educators for a morning of learning and fun!

Film Program: Making Memories at the Movies

Join Marcy Rhodes, MSW, as she facilitates Making Memories Through the Arts in our Gillespie Room.  During this program we’ll enjoy clips and discussion of films across a variety of genres. Recognizing that movies have the power to spark memories and create connections, this program presents an opportunity to engage in discussion while socializing with others. 

Gallery Tour: The Seat of Action

In commemoration of America250, The Seat of Action spotlights the experiences of the Long Islanders during the Revolutionary War through incredible artwork and artifacts. Enjoy a guided discussion with museum educators for a morning of learning and fun!

Music Program: Jack & Mary – Music from the Heart

Since meeting 40 years ago at a jam session and discovering how well their voices fit together, they’ve moved through life’s ups and downs by blending harmonies built on years of

marriage, conversation, and listening. Sing along, dance, and enjoy a mix of musical favorites – from The Beatles to the Great American Songbook, from Americana to mellow classic rock.

Music & Movement Program: Memory Disco

Wednesday, June 3, 2026 at 11:00 am

Move and groove, laugh and sing! We’ll listen to hits from across the decades in this multi-sensory musical experience, specifically designed for the needs of dementia care. Memory Disco was created by the Day by Day Project, and LIM is currently the only New York affiliate of this program.

Through Our Eyes

This annual art exhibition highlights work created by people living with memory loss, as well as the joy that the arts can bring into our lives even while navigating the challenges of dementia.  

The 2026 exhibition will take place October 1-18 in the Cowles Gallery. Our community partner will be announced soon.

Arts & Alzheimer’s Conference

This annual conference offers an opportunity to discover the vast and enriching opportunities available for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of memory loss. Open to personal and professional care partners, as well as artists and administrators who are facilitating such programs, this day-long event gives participants an opportunity to connect and learn from one another.  

This year, we celebrate our 10th conference on Thursday, June 18, 2026.  Presenters will be announced shortly.
