Bring your group to The Long Island Museum for an engaging visit that combines art, history, and culture. Guided group tours offer access to the Carriage Museum—home to one of the nation’s finest collections of horse-drawn vehicles—along with rotating art and history exhibitions that change throughout the year (See current and upcoming exhibitions). Led by knowledgeable educators and tailored to your group’s interests, our tours provide fascinating insights into Long Island’s art and history, along with a look into the world before cars.
Guided Group Tours
Guided Group Tour Pricing
LIM offers guided tours for groups with a minimum of 10 people. Prices for tours of one gallery (one hour) are $20 per person; tours of two galleries (two hours) are $25 per person.
When to Book Your Guided Group Tour
Guided group tours booked during regular museum hours, Thursday through Sunday (see below for museum hours), include a 10% Gift Shop discount and visitor passes to allow tour guests to continue exploring the museum on their own through to closing time. Guided group tours may also be scheduled Monday through Wednesday, but are limited to the designated tour area only and do not include a Gift Shop discount or passes to tour the entire museum.

Guided group tours may pay in cash or with a single check on the day of the tour, or by credit card in advance.

“A World Before Cars”
This guided tour explores a variety of horse-drawn vehicles, from stagecoaches to purpose-driven vehicles to the luxury vehicles of the very wealthy. Tour discussion includes information about the people who used these vehicles, the world they lived in, and the influences that impacted the development of American carriage design.
This tour takes place on the entry level of the Carriage Museum building and is an excellent choice for a shorter 30-minute tour. This tour can be expanded to a 45- to 90-minute tour to include an additional level of the museum building.

“Carriages of the Gilded Age”
The carriages of the Gilded Age (roughly 1870–1900) were sophisticated, luxurious, and diverse, serving as both a mode of transport and a symbol of status for the wealthy elite. Learn about the vehicles and the fascinating people who owned and used them, including William K. & Alva Vanderbilt, Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, James Hazen Hyde, Colonel Delancy Astor Kane, and more!
This tour visits 2 levels of the 3-level Carriage Museum and is best for a 45- to 90-minute tour.

“The Carriage Exposition Gallery”
Modeled on the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair Transportation Building, this guided tour highlights the finest horse-drawn vehicles money could buy, and the carriage-making companies that created them.
This is an excellent 30-minute tour that can easily be expanded to a 45- or 90-minute tour. The tour takes place entirely on the upper level of the museum building, reachable by ramp.

The Seat of Action: Long Island in the American Revolution & Beyond
(February 19 – October 18, 2026)
History Museum
LIM is proud to celebrate the semiquincentennial of the American Revolution and the pivotal role Long Island — an area that was under martial law and British control longer than any other part of the American colonies — played in our nation’s fight for independence. From the daring espionage of the Culper Spy Ring and the leadership of William Floyd to the vital contributions of women and soldiers of color, the exhibition explores the powerful stories of everyday Long Islanders who helped shape the course of American history.

Long Island in the 70s
(May 14 – October 18, 2026)
History Museum
Get ready for a groovy trip back in time! This outta-sight exhibition takes you on a nostalgic journey through the 1970s, featuring artifacts from the decade, including clothing, toys, household objects, artwork, and even a full-size station wagon. Explore sections highlighting major events that shaped communities across Long Island, from politics (the Watergate scandal) and environmentalism (the Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant and Oyster Bay Bridge) to fashion and entertainment, the dawn of personal technology, and contemporary art.

Enduring Heart: Native American Long Island
(August 20 – December 20, 2026)
Art Museum
A celebration of the First Peoples of Long Island. Our Native American communities and people are at the heart of this region’s history, its present, and its future. This exhibition is the first at LIM to explore the historical contours and the present-day artistic legacies of this story, developed in collaboration with an advisory panel of Native American community members and scholarly experts.
Unguided Group Tours
LIM offers unguided group visits for a discounted fee of $10 per person, plus a 10% Gift Shop discount. Unguided group visits can take place only during regular open hours, Thursday through Sunday (see below for museum hours). A minimum of 10 people is needed. Unguided group tours will pay at the Visitors Center upon their arrival at the museum; no registration required.

Thursday: 11:30 am–7:00 pm (free admission from 5:00– 7:00 pm)
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday: noon–5:00 pm

Please note that the Museum closes annually to the public from late December through mid-February. During this time, rotating exhibitions are closed, but tours of the Carriage Museum remain available.
