FILM @ LIM “A Witch Story” Screening and Talk | FREE

October 30 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm

The Port Jefferson Arts Council and the Long Island Museum have joined forces to bring films to our community that touch upon a variety of topics. This October, join us for a free screening of A Witch Story (2022) by Yolanda Pividal.

A deconstruction of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, this gripping documentary reveals the trials’ connection to contemporary witch hunts and women’s struggles through a feminist lens. For writer Yolanda Pividal, the story becomes deeply personal when she discovers she is a descendant of Martha Allen Carrier, one of the women hanged in Salem during the trials. Returning to retrace Martha’s final days, Yolanda confronts the haunting reality that, for millions worldwide, Salem is far from over

Following the screening, join us for an engaging discussion with Stony Brook University Professor Dr. Susan Hinely about the social and political forces behind the witch hunts in America and Europe and their links to contemporary gender-based violence, along with Sheila Argueta, an advanced History undergraduate from the university, lending her expertise in historical costuming.

Feel free to come in costume for a bit of extra Halloween fun!

LOCATION

The screening and talk will take place in the Gillespie Room located in the Carriage Museum.
