FILM@LIM: “A New York Minute” Shorts about NYC

LIM and the Port Jefferson Arts Council bring films to our community that touch upon a variety of topics for FREE! Each film screening includes an engaging talk with a guest speaker or a fun activity.
Join us this October for a back-to-back screening of three award-winning short films, each offering a distinct and compelling glimpse into life in New York City. From different neighborhoods and perspectives to the everyday experiences that often go unseen, these films remind us that even in a city of more than 8 million people, every person has a story worth knowing.
Following the screening, stay for a conversation with several of the filmmakers, who will share insights into their creative process, the stories behind their films, and what inspired them to bring these unique perspectives to the screen.
Petal Pusher
Directed by David Abel
This heartfelt portrait of a family-owned floral shop in the depths of Penn Station – a floral shop that was a touchstone for countless Long Island Rail Road commuters since the ’70s — must finally close ahead of the major renovations of the station. This film is a tender look back and tribute to the patriarch of the family who started the business decades ago.

Survival Without Rent

Rare archival footage reveals the activism of New Yorkers reacting to the broken institutional trust between the city and its residents. Follow activists who take back agency for housing by “squatting” in abandoned buildings while forming mutual aid groups dedicated to making those structures liveable and accessible.

All the Queens Houses
Directed by Sean Mowry
A “photographic exploration” of the unique architectural stylings of housing in Queens. This whimsical and curious film follows an architect, who photographs the houses in Queens and ends up revealing both the beauty and personality of the borough that is strongly connected to its diverse population.

All screenings are held in the LIM’s Gillespie Room located in the Carriage Museum unless otherwise noted. Space is limited so please register to reserve your spot.
