Telling our Story: Long Island’s Native American Heritage

November 16 @ 1:00 pm

Join us as we honor and celebrate National Native American Heritage Month with members from the Matinecock, Montaukett, Setalcott, Shinnecock, and Unkechaug Nations, as they tell their stories of strength and survival through voice and dance.

The Montaukett Dancers will present two performances: a Women’s Traditional Dance and a Women’s Blanket Dance. Madeline “Mandy” Jackson, a member of the Montaukett Nation, will moderate the program and offer a Four Directions Blessing. Joining the event, Helen Sells, Co-Chair of the Setalcott Nation, and Sandi Brewster-walker, Executive Director & Government Affairs Officer of the Montaukett Indian Nation, will share insights on the heritage of Long Island’s Native American community, as well as members of the Unkechaug, Matinecock, and Shinnecock Nations.

This will be a beautiful and exciting program for all ages to learn more about our Native American history and the cultural experiences!

LOCATION

The Carriage Museum’s Gillespie Room (To ensure the preservation of our collections, building temperatures are kept cool. For your comfort, we suggest bringing a light jacket or sweater).
