FILM@LIM & Summer Thursdays: Free Screening of “Women Laughing”

Event Series (See All)

September 24 @ 7:00 pm 8:00 pm

LIM and the Port Jefferson Arts Council bring films to our community that touch upon a variety of topics for FREE! Each film screening includes an engaging talk with a guest speaker or a fun activity. This September, join us as we watch Women Laughing (2025).

Longtime New Yorker cartoonist Liza Donnelly sets out to explore her lifelong passion for women’s humor and cartooning by speaking, laughing, and drawing with a diverse group of remarkable women who create cartoons for the iconic magazine. Inspired by her acclaimed book Very Funny Ladies and Liza’s own biography, the film also looks back at the fascinating history and evolution of single panel cartoons- from the 1920s, to the present- and reveals how far women have come in a field historically dominated by men. Women Laughing includes intimate conversations with some of the most celebrated and groundbreaking cartoonists at The New Yorker including Roz Chast, Emily Flake, Sarah Akinterinwa, Liana Fink, Amy Hwang, and Bishakh Som. Liza also speaks with Emma Allen, the magazine’s first female cartoon editor.

Guest Speaker

After the film, join special guest Victoria Hughes for a fun conversation about using humor to tell stories. Victoria Hughes is a New York comic with a jaded yet playful perspective- she gives an honest, weird and individual view into the raw moments of her own life. You may have seen her at the Good Karma Comedy Festival, or performing throughout the Governor’s Comedy Club locations on Long Island, and Broadway Comedy Club in NYC.

This program will take place in the Gillespie Room located in the Carriage Museum. Come early to enjoy free entry into our exhibitions after 5:00 pm.
